Live & Learn book

As we discussed in our main feature last month, parents have a huge bearing on the way young people drive.

What’s more, parents have a big part to play in young people learning to drive, and sometimes that proves to be a big bug bear for ADIs. The last thing we need is for all our hard work undone when our pupils undertake private practice with their oft out of date but, seemingly all-knowing, parents.

This new book by Neil Snow is a great attempt to bring those wayward parents into the fold. It explains the underlying causes of young driver crashes in easy-to-understand language, and helps parents pursue risk reduction strategies for young drivers when they first set out on the road. After all, research shows that 94% of parents’ fear for their children’s lives in cars and behind the wheel. There's also plenty of help and advice on how they can structure driving lessons and private practice. Go to: RRP: £10.99 - 3 copies up for grabs!

Win an AlcoSense Pro worth £149.99

Personal breathalyser, easy to use and as accurate as the police version

As part of our teaching syllabus, it’s important that we provide our learners with a real understanding of the dangers, responsibilities and consequences of getting behind the wheel after drinking. Perhaps the big lesson for us all is that the morning after doesn’t necessarily mean you are safe.

The AlcoSense Pro is the latest in their line of personal breathalysers, and the evolution means it is simpler to use, easier to understand and as accurate as the police version (+/- 0.05% BAC). It features colour coded results (red for over the limit), a “blow coach” which shows in real time whether you are blowing correctly, and also an estimate of how long until you are safe.

A cynch to set up, easy to use, small, solidly built and ideal for the glove box. It’s the perfect tool to check any worse-for-waer looking pupils, as well as being a great practical teaching aid and prompt for that all important discussion on being fit to drive. The ‘pro’ is the business.

Win a Ring RAC 635

It’s Tyre Safety Month and the pressure’s on, and it’s not just hot air,

If your tyres aren’t pumped up to their correct pressure, it doesn’t matter how good your car is, or the tyres, brakes, steering, fuel consumption are supposed to be, they won’t be achieving their potential and can actually be dangerous.

The Ring RAC 635 comes in a neat zipper case – perfect for keeping stored in your car. There’s a long airline and an even longer power lead (3 metres), both with individual storage compartments. Powered from the 12v in car socket, the compressor works fast to accurately achieve the desired tyre pressure. The digital read out allows you to pre-set the correct pressure (psi, bar, kpa) so that the motor cuts out when that pressure is achieved (accurate to +/-1psi). You can even pump up footballs, camping mattresses…
