Motorists struggling with increasingly bright headlights are being urged to treat so-called “anti-dazzle” glasses with caution.

New research by What Car? found only limited benefits from the spectacles.

What’s more, there are potentially dangerous drawbacks.

WhatCar ?’s study comes amid growing concern about headlight glare on UK roads, with multiple surveys suggesting the issue is worsening as modern LED lighting becomes more widespread.

According to the RAC, a majority of drivers now believe headlight glare has intensified in recent years, with some even reducing night driving as a result.

Such is the level of concern that the government has commissioned research into the issue and whether new regulations for vehicle manufacturers need to be introduced.

Research shows headlight glare can impair vision, reduce contrast, and delay hazard detection, particularly at night.

Studies and findings from the Transport Research Laboratory link brighter headlights to increased “dazzle,” with many drivers reporting temporary blindness and reduced confidence.

Glare also changes behaviour, with some drivers slowing down or avoiding night driving altogether.

While crash data is less clear, estimates suggest glare contributes to some collisions, though it is often underreported.

Factors like LED brightness, SUV height, and poor alignment worsen the issue.

Officials and experts say glare may “compromise visual comfort, confidence and safety” and consider it a genuine safety concern, even though its exact impact on crashes is still being studied.

Seeing through

Anti-dazzle, or night-driving glasses, are marketed as a solution to this problem.

They typically feature yellow or amber-tinted lenses, they are designed to filter blue light, reduce glare from oncoming headlights, and improve contrast in low-light conditions.

Some versions also include anti-reflective coatings intended to minimise internal reflections on the lens surface.

In theory, this combination should make it easier for drivers to distinguish objects and reduce discomfort from bright lights.

However, What Car? testing suggests the reality is more nuanced.

Its research found that while certain anti-glare glasses provided “small benefits,” others delivered no noticeable improvement, and some even worsened vision.

This variation appears to stem from inconsistent product quality and a lack of standardised regulation in the market.

Visible dangers

Without clear benchmarks, performance can differ significantly between brands.

The findings echo broader scientific studies, which have generally shown that while tinted lenses may reduce perceived glare in specific situations, they do not reliably improve visibility or reaction times when driving at night.

It has led experts to warn that the downsides of anti-dazzle glasses could outweigh any limited benefits.

One key issue is reduced light transmission.

Because tinted lenses block some incoming light, they can make already dark conditions even harder to see in, potentially compromising driver awareness.

There are also concerns about behavioural risks.

Drivers may develop a false sense of security while wearing the glasses, leading them to drive faster or pay less attention, increasing crash risk.

Additionally, some research suggests that rather than improving reaction times, certain night-driving glasses may slightly slow visual responses, again raising safety concerns.

Blind belief

The debate over anti-dazzle glasses sits within a broader discussion about road safety.

Glare from modern headlights is now a major concern, with some drivers reporting temporary blindness, headaches and reduced confidence behind the wheel.
