Leasing Options has done the research to discover how many cars are produced around the world per hour, day and year. As well as revealing the manufacturers selling the most cars worldwide.

Toyota tops targets

Toyota was by far the most in-demand manufacturer of 2020, totalling over 8.5 million car sales last year. That’s nearly 24 thousand cars sales a day and a thousand an hour! They also out-sold rivals Volkswagen by 3.4 million, which equates to just under 10,000 more sales every day and almost 400 more per hour.

In comparison to Mazda who landed tenth place, Toyota sold 7.4 million more cars last year. Which equates to 20.4 thousand more a day and 850 more an hour.

Star rises

As you can see in the top 10 list below, in the battle of the executive cars, it was Mercedes-Benz that came out on top over their fierce rivals BMW and Audi, selling around 200,000 cars more than BMW and around 500,000 more than Audi in 2020.

China champions

China produced the most passenger cars in 2020, and by some way. Last year the country produced almost 20 million cars, nearly three times more than Japan, which was the second-highest producer in the world, making close to 7 million cars.

Breaking it down further, in comparison to Japan, China produced 13 million more cars per year. Which equates to 35.7 thousand more a day and almost 1.5 thousand more per hour.

Being able to produce such a large amount of cars becomes even more amazing when you break it down into smaller timestamps.

Breakdown of China’s Passenger Car Production:

19,994,081  Per Year

1,666,173     Per Month

384,50        Per Week

54,778          Per Day

2,282           Per Hour

38                Per Minute

0.6               Per Second

Covid slow down

The last 18 months has seen all walks of life affected by the pandemic, and the motor industry is no different. Figures for car production in 2020 show 55,834,456 passenger cars made. That number is drastically lower than in previous years due to the impact COVID 19 on sales and production. According to Statista’s Research Department, 2020 showed a decline of around 15% of cars produced compared with the previous year.

Toyota tops league

An estimated 152,971 passenger cars produced every day around the world during 2020. Adding this number to that of all the cars already driving around and it produces a mind boggling total. The manufacturer leading the charge is Toyota. They created 23,814 brand new cars each day around the world, around 15% of all passenger cars created each day.

Thousands per hour

Every hour, around 6,374 passenger cars are produced around the world. Out of all the countries, it’s China that tops the leaderboard, producing just shy of 2,300 each and every hour of the day. That’s around seven times the number of passenger cars produced in the UK and the USA, combined.

Hundreds a minute

Each minute of every day, 106 passenger cars are produced around the world. Toyota again top the list and, along with Volkswagen and Nissan models, total 34 of those 106 cars. This is just under a third of all cars produced per minute.

Production is flying

Globally, 1.8 cars are produced every second. That’s more per second, according to omnicalculator, than the number of weddings that take place (0.98) and more than the number of aeroplanes that take off around the world (0.97).
