Young Driver Focus is an annual conference organised by FirstCar.

As the name implies, it looks at the young driver world and analyse how best to improve the safety of young drivers.

Great track record

Now in its seventh year, Road Safety GB (RSGB) and the RAC Foundation work with FirstCar to sponsor the event. These are three of the most powerful brands in the young driver market, combining forces to find ways of improving attitudes and abilities behind the wheel.

A unique event, it focuses on cutting young driver casualties by specifically addressing key road safety issues 17-25 year olds.

Access all areas

Unfortunately, like all conferences over the last year, it suffered a coronavirus cancellation. But in order to make up for the lack of a live event, FirstCar has created a digital magazine that includes features written by the events proposed key speakers.

The ‘YDF Report ’21’ has just been published with a huge amount of great young driver road safety content. It’s is aimed at all road safety practitioners, not least driver trainers. It provides information on the latest road safety research, some of the successful interventions that have recently taken place around the country, through to calls for better regulation on the road.

It includes features by:

  • Catherine Mottram (DfT)
  • Bill Pope (DVSA)
  • Louise Palomino (Road Safety Trust)
  • Dr Jessica Merman (Lecturer in Psychology, University of Edinburgh)
  • Matt Staton (Road Safety GB)
  • Andrew Drewary (Road Safety Smart)
  • Liz Box  (RAC Foundation)
  • James Evans (FirstCar and Honest Truth)
  • Ian McIntosh (RED Driving School)
  • Neal Kinnear (TRL)
  • Dr Victoria Kroll & Prof David Crundall (Nottingham Trent University)
  • Leanne Savigar-Shaw (Staffordshire University)
  • Chris McLaughlin (Network Rail)

Together they provide the latest expertise that can help you understand the minds and actions of young drivers.

From understanding of speed and its consequences, to a call to ban hands-free phone use, even the latest thinking on Graduated Driver Licensing, there’s plenty here to feast your eyes and minds on.
