The electric vehicle charging network is seeing an increasing uptake.

UK’s biggest motorway electric vehicle (EV) charging network, GRIDSERVE Electric Highway, has witnessed a tripling of use in one year. In turn, this is a quadrupling of the energy supplied.

GRIDSERVE acquired the network from Ecotricity a year ago. Sweeping reforms were implemented to improve standards. It came amid claims the infrastructure was unreliable and generally inconvenient. This was believed to be hampering the public switch to EVs.

The number of working charge stations, reliability and average charge times have all been improved. It now claims to be charging more than 100,000 EVs every month with net zero energy.

Millions and millions

A multimillion-pound programme has been implemented . Chargers are now easier than ever to use, rely on and with an increasing number of high speed chargers.

Reliability is the number one priority for EV drivers. The company now boasts 99% uptime. This is a dramatic improvement, running in parallel with the dramatic increases in EV take up.

Accessibility has also improved, with larger bays and contactless payment.

Electrifying 12 months

Toddington Harper, Founder and CEO of GRIDSERVE, says they have achieved a lot in just one year. Just as EV ownership is increasing at an unprocedented rate, so the charging network is growing too.  “ I’m proud to say that in just one year, GRIDSERVE has made reliable EV travel across Great Britain possible – from Land’s End to John o’ Groats, and Pembrokeshire to Dover”.

However, he admits that they “have only touched the surface”. There is much more work to do in order to keep up with growing demand and public expectations. He says their mission  is to provide ” EV drivers with the confidence that they can set off on any length of journey, to anywhere in the country, driving any type of EV, and have a better experience than making the same trip in a petrol or diesel vehicle.”

 1,000 miles of free charge

Drivers across the country can join the one year celebration. Through a competition, five drivers will win 1,000 miles of free charge across the entire network.  To enter, drivers must find the GRIDSERVE birthday wrapped chargers hidden across the network and submit an image. Use Twitter or Instagram tagging GRIDSERVE and using the hashtag #GSElectricHighwayBday.  The competition closes at 23:59 on Sunday 31st July 2022, with winners announced on Twitter and Instagram by 11am on Friday 12th August 2022.
