Help is at hand to help driver new and old improve their motorway driving.

According to various surveys, their are many drivers who refuse to use motorways. The high speed multi-lane carriageways are viewed by some drivers as a step to far, with joining and exiting utilising slip roads just one area of anxiety. The high speeds and lanes of fast moving traffic, including large lorries, are also key deterrents.

But there is new help at hand.

The hub

National Highways has launched a ‘Driving on motorways’ hub. This is packed full of useful guidance and information to help drivers feel more confident when driving on motorways.

Part of National Highways’ role is to help keep people safe on our roads. They want people to be safe and feel confident when they travel. There are many ways they are doing this, including providing help and guidance to drivers about the roads they look after.

Information is key

The hub includes a film National Highways has produced which features Suzi Perry and Ortis Deley from the ‘Gadget Show’.

This film explains how the individual elements of an all-lane running smart motorway work together to maintain safety and reduce congestion. There are also shorter films covering things like live lane breakdowns, red X signs and variable speed limits.

Moving forward

The idea is to provide an ongoing useful source of in formation and guidance. To ensure longevity and to make the hub as useful as possible, it will be added to and updated in an ongoing process over the coming months.

For ADIs, it will provide a useful resource to steer your students to.
