Londoners to hail first robotaxis within weeks as UK enters driverless era
The UK’s driverless vehicle revolution has taken a major step forward after Uber announced that members of the public in London will be able to book autonomous taxi journeys within a matter of weeks.
It marks the first time self-driving vehicles will be available to fare-paying passengers in Britain.
Keir Starner spearheaded a week focused on new technology, with Monday morning’s announcement about the imminent public access to the autonomous taxis.

The landmark move will see Uber deploy autonomous vehicles powered by British artificial intelligence company Wayve, with the first robotaxi journeys expected to begin as soon as regulatory approvals are secured.
Members of the public can now register their interest through the Uber app to be among the first passengers to experience the technology.
Initially, the vehicles will operate with trained safety operators behind the wheel, monitoring the autonomous system and ready to intervene if necessary.
However, the long-term ambition is for fully driverless services to operate in London as legislation catches up with the technology.
Tech-tastic times
The announcement represents a significant milestone for the UK’s automated vehicle sector and follows the Government’s decision to accelerate trials of self-driving passenger services.
Applications opened last month for operators wishing to run self-driving taxi and shuttle services on British roads, with ministers hoping the technology will create thousands of jobs and contribute billions to the economy over the next decade.
The announcement aligns with Sir Keir Starmer’s wider growth strategy, which has identified advanced technology, artificial intelligence and autonomous transport as key sectors for future investment and job creation.
The Government estimates the self-driving vehicle industry could contribute £42 billion to the UK economy and support 38,000 jobs by 2035.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander welcomed the development, describing self-driving technology as having the potential to transform travel while improving safety and supporting economic growth.
Alexander commented: “Another vote of confidence in our plans for self-driving vehicles.”
She added, “The future of transport is arriving. Self-driving vehicles could improve transport for millions of people, add £42 billion to our economy and create 38,000 jobs by 2035.”
Plugged in and ready to go
The vehicles chosen for the London rollout will be electric Ford Mustang Mach-E models equipped with cameras, radar and advanced AI software developed by Wayve.
Unlike some rival systems that rely heavily on pre-mapped routes, Wayve’s technology uses machine learning to adapt to real-world situations, learning from experience much like human drivers.
London presents one of the toughest environments in the world for autonomous vehicles.
The capital’s roads feature complex junctions, heavy traffic, cyclists, pedestrians, buses, roadworks, and constantly changing road layouts.
Wayve has been testing its technology on London streets since 2018 and believes its AI systems are now capable of safely handling these challenges.
Relinquishing control
For driver trainers and road safety professionals, the development raises important questions about the future relationship between drivers and vehicle technology.
The UK’s Automated Vehicles Act, passed in 2024, provides the legal framework for introducing self-driving vehicles and establishes responsibility for automated driving systems when they control a vehicle.
A wider rollout of fully autonomous passenger services is expected from 2027 once the legislation is fully implemented.
Supporters argue that autonomous vehicles could significantly reduce collisions caused by human error, which currently contributes to the vast majority of road crashes.
Automated systems do not become distracted, fatigued, impaired by alcohol or drugs, or prone to poor decision-making under pressure.
However, concerns remain around public acceptance, cybersecurity, system reliability and the impact on professional drivers.
The Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association has previously questioned whether robotaxis can cope with the unique complexity of London’s streets and warned about potential impacts on employment within the taxi and private hire sectors.
Ready to go
The launch also signals the beginning of what could become an increasingly competitive market.
Alongside Uber and Wayve, companies including Waymo, owned by Google parent Alphabet, and Chinese autonomous technology giant Baidu are planning their own London operations.
For now, Londoners are being offered a glimpse of what many believe will become a normal part of urban transport over the coming decade.
While human drivers will remain central to UK roads for many years to come, today’s announcement suggests the era of autonomous passenger transport is no longer a distant concept but a reality.
As regulators, road safety professionals and driver trainers monitor developments closely, the first public robotaxi journeys in London could provide a crucial test of whether the technology is ready to earn public trust on Britain’s busiest roads.
