Safe driving doesn’t begin with ignition – it starts with intention.

In my decades of training and advocacy, I’ve seen how a few minutes of preparation can prevent breakdowns, protect lives, and build lasting habits.

That’s why I teach a simple but powerful routine: the POWER check – Petrol, Oil, Water, Electrics, and Rubber.

Put your foot down

These five essentials, when checked regularly, help motorists avoid unexpected stops, mechanical failures, and even legal trouble.

Yet even experienced drivers overlook them until it’s too late.

Recently, a motorist shared a story with me.

He’d been pulled over for a faulty taillight, feeling embarrassed despite a spotless record.

A light tap on the bonnet revealed a loose connection.

The officers offered a friendly reminder: “You need to check these things more often – it could be dangerous and even illegal if unnoticed.”

Later, he told me, “I’ll never forget the word POWER. It’s catchy, simple, and relevant.”

The POWER

Let’s break it down:

Petrol: Always check your fuel level before driving. Relying on the warning light can leave you stranded – especially in rural areas where help isn’t close by.

Oil: The lifeblood of your engine. Low levels can lead to engine failure and costly repairs. A quick dipstick check can prevent major headaches.

Water: Includes coolant and screenwash. Coolant regulates engine temperature and prevents overheating. Screenwash keeps your windscreen clear – essential for visibility in rain, spray, or grime.

Electrics: Covers your battery, lights, and warning indicators. A walk-around inspection of brake lights, indicators, and headlights ensures visibility and ensures compliance with legal requirements.

Rubber: Refers to tyres. Check tread depth, pressure, and condition. Worn or underinflated tyres reduce grip and increase fuel consumption—putting everyone at risk.

The reality

Any vehicle, regardless of age or build quality, becomes unsafe without basic maintenance.

A roadside breakdown isn’t just inconvenient; it can be dangerous.

I’ve seen drivers panic and attempt risky roadside fixes that only add to the hazard.

These situations are avoidable.

You don’t need specialist training to carry out these checks, just awareness.

That’s what POWER delivers: a simple framework that gives drivers control and confidence.

More importantly, it reflects a principle I stand by: education is more effective than enforcement.

Penalties come after mistakes.

Education helps prevent them.

When drivers understand not just what to do, but why it matters, they drive better.

The promise

I’ve made POWER a central part of driver education – from lessons and workshops to campaigns and professional development.

It’s a tool every motorist should carry, not just in their glovebox, but in their mindset.

This is a simple and effective lesson to pass on to your pupils and any other driver – let the POWER be with you.

It’s not just a checklist, but a promise to keep, because safe journeys always begin with smart habits.
