Hitting the headlines on the 6th March was the story of an electric vehicle that could not be stopped by the driver.

Following a similar story last ear, it cast a shadow over the safety of new technology in cars.

It raised the issue of whether too much tech  in-built could be putting motorists in more danger rather than reducing risk from driver failures.

Put you foot down

It has now been revealed that a 31-year-old man had been arrested by police involved in this case.

There is credible suspicion of dangerous driving and causing a public nuisance.

This driver claimed the brakes had failed on his Jaguar I-Pace while driving on the motorway.

He had called the police while behind the wheel, stating that the brakes had failed on his electric car.

Officers from Merseyside and Greater Manchester had to block the ‘runaway’ car between a number of police vehicles.

They successfully brought it to a stop on the M62.

Plugging in

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) launched an immediate investigation after the incident.

The media speculated on the potential dangers of these tech topping EVs.

But now,  Merseyside Police have released a statement confirming that following an investigation, a man had been arrested in relation to the incident on the M62.

It continued: “An investigation, supported by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), is underway and a 31-year-old man from Bolton has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and causing a public nuisance.”

It added that he had been questioned and released under investigation, pending further inquiries.

In a statement, JLR said that it seeks to investigate all reports of issues relating to product safety and will continue to co-operate with Merseyside Police and the DVSA where required.
