Ealing has landed some unwanted publicity and its no comedy.

It is now receiving the title as the home to the most reckless young drivers in the UK.

Capital offences

According to new analysis by Adrian Flux insurance, the West London district is the area with the speediest teenagers on the road. On average, every FluxScore user there (98.5%) will receive a serious warning about their speeding. This compares to less than one in five in Conwy, Wales (17%).

There are also considerable concerns about young driver standards elsewhere in the capital. Tower Hamlets and Southwark are both named and shamed in the top 10. Outside the capital, only Carmarthenshire and Rhondda Cynon Taf in Wales and Scarborough feature on the list.
When it comes to careful young drivers, there’s a far greater geographical spread, from Plymouth to Chesterfield, west to east of England.

Red and black

The warnings are triggered via black box monitor telematics monitoring systems. This sits in the driver’s car as part of their insurance requirements, keeping an artificial eye their performance in the hope of improving safety and saving them money.

“This gamification style approach has helped sensible drivers save up to 60% for year-long safe driving upon renewal,” says Scott Goodliffe at Adrian Flux. “Unfortunately, some users are less attentive or cautious and their behaviour is a cause for concern”.

Monitoring their driving tends to work as a deterrent to poor or dangerous driving styles. It also allows insurance companies the opportunity to flag up poor driving and provide tips and strategies to improve driving attitudes.

Goodlife adds  that they are “proud that they are helping to change behaviour behind the wheel”.

Carrot and stick

The company says FluxScore reduces speeding by around 70%. The insurer says the number of problem drivers is “small”, but they have a “negative impact” on the figures.

The self-fitting black box helps reward safe driving. The daily  updates show how the previous 24 hours’ driving has affected a driver’s renewal premium.

Drivers deemed as driving dangerously or above the speed limit will receive alerts. Three Alert 2s,  result in the policy being suspended and drivers unable to use their car.
