Do you have a name for your motor?

For some suffering breakdowns  or servicing costs, they are probably not for printing.

However, it seems that more and more of us like to give our cars a human characteristic to show their connection with it.

 New identity

Motor retailer JCT600 has recently conducted a study into the most popular car names in the UK. The  national  survey of over 2000 people reveals Betsy to be the nation’s most popular car name .

Other popular car names included Betty, Penny, Old girl, Freddie, Herbie, Dottie, Daisy, Matilda, Ralph and Tina.

The results also showed that there were some more unique names that people gave their cars including, Ziggy, Wispa, the tank, Misty, Clive and Carlos.

Older wiser?

The research also discovered that 18-24 years olds are the most likely to name their car. For the young, 31% liked to name their motor, compared to only 10% of those 65+.

It also found that people in the South-West of the UK are the most likely to name their car with over 24% naming their car.

In comparison, only 16% of those living in Wales gave their tin machine the human touch.

Data also revealed that 24% of women named their car compared to only 16% of men.

Interestingly, over 30% of people with five children or more do name their car. Perhaps this suggests that bigger families treat their car as one of their own.

MINI drivers are the most likely to name their car (40%) compared to only 15% of Toyota drivers.

Valued relationships

John Tordoff, Executive Chairman at JCT600 says: “Cars are a very personal thing for people. It’s an environment that people want to make their own. The personification shows our true love for our cars, making them almost feel like part of the family. It is interesting to see how the younger generation are the most likely to name their cars meaning that a tradition that has been around for a long time seems likely to  continue.”
