New initiative in Manchester enlists the help of ADIs.

Engage provides ADIs in north west England with professional training and learner resources. These can be integrated into standard driving lessons to improve post test safety behind the wheel. The aim is to influence attitudes and behaviours on topics that are critical to the safety of young drivers, their passengers and other road users.

Getting together

The new partnership with Safer Roads Greater Manchester expands the network of Engage ADIs. It now incorporates 19 local authorities across Cheshire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester.

“We are delighted to have partnered with Engage,” says Peter Boulton, head of highways at Transport for Greater Manchester. “Together our goal is to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on the roads, by training smarter drivers.

“This is a brilliant opportunity for drivers to improve their own knowledge and understanding of road safety factors which can affect their driving ability and how to overcome these issues as they learn.

“I urge any ADI in Greater Manchester to find out more about Engage and join us in our journey to make our roads safer.”

Freedom to talk

The Engage programme and resources have been developed by Ian Edwards.

Internationally recognised, Ian is at the forefront of coaching and client centred learning here in the UK.

Open discussions with young drivers that are needed are often difficult to have. Conversations about fatigue and drug or drink driving etc can be easily viewed as  “judgemental and accusatory”.

“Engage helps an instructor overcome this by providing them with simple, structured and interesting resources,” says Ian. These have been “carefully developed to go past simply providing statistics or simplistic information.”
